St Colmcille’s just about had enough to hold enough Ratoath in this B league division 1 encounter, played in mild spring conditions in Pilltown on Satiurday afternoon.
Playing against the wind in the first half Ratoath got off to a decent start and were 2 points to 1 up after 8 minutes. After that though the home side had their best spell and scored 2 goals in quick succession. By the 20th minute they were 2-8 to 0-5 ahead. The visitors responded after that though and a goal of their own along with a couple of points left them well in contention at half time trailing on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-7.
The second half saw Ratoath gradually whittle down the lead without actually getting on level terms with their opponents. Points from play and frees from the Ratoath men got them to within a point midway through the second half (2-11 to 1-13) but alas they failed to score for the rest of the game. The Colmcille’s defence held out while 2 points in injury time ensured a hard fought win for the hosts in this 1st round.
