In a swap of grades last year paired the Intermediate Hurling champions Ratoath and Senior Hurling relegated side Navan O’Mahonys on a cold Thursday night, last, in Ratoath.

Ratoath started the game with two points from center forward Padraig O Hanrahan. Clever play from Stephen Quirke feeding Dylan Regan getting Navan O Mahonys first score of the game on 7 minutes. The Captain Paddy Skehan of the Navan side added a second, putting the sides level, then Padraig O’Hanrahan decided to added a free and one from play to give Ratoath a two point lead with Skehan again replying to keep O’Mahonys in touch.

Then O’Hanrahan started to make the game his own adding another point from play and two more frees bringing his and Ratoath’s tally to seven points. Paddy Dillon worked well in the forwards and combined with Barry McEvoy to point and Dylan Regan adding a long range point, keeping the Navan side in touching distance. Ger Brennan and Ben McGowan got in the scoring act, both adding a point from play each and another two from center forward Hanrahan bringing Ratoath’s tally to 11 points. McEvoy and Dillon combined again to point and probably the score of the game coming from center back Jake Regan, bringing O’Mahonys score to seven points. First goal of the game came on 22 minutes from Brian Farrelly ball breaking on the edge of the square for Farrelly to finish well. Another O’Hanrahan was a thorn in O’Mahonys side getting a point from play sent the two sides in 1-13 to 0-7 points at half time.

Ratoath continued where they left off with Ger Brennan finishing well to the back of the net. Mikey Kelly responded with a point and a rally from Skehan with four points in a row tried to close the gap, but Ratoath’s lead was to wide and O’Hanrahan built on his impressive scores with 3 further frees along with a great attacking point from wing back Paddy Dowd kept Ratoath’s lead intact. Sean O’Hanrahan two points and Brian Murphy finished off the game with a score of Ratoath 2-21 Navan O’Mahonys 0-13.
