Ratoath’s senior hurlers got the better of Killyon in this 3rd round championship clash played in Pairc Tailteann Navan on Monday evening. In a game that ebbed and flowed it was their second half performance that saw off a gallant Killyon side that battled from the 15th minute with 14 men.
The game began with Ratoath on the front foot and a goal in the 5th minute put them 1-2 to no score in front. Killyon soon settled and with Niall Smullen unerring from frees and a 16th minute goal from Calvin Ryan they cancelled out Ratoath’s early advantage. While Padraig O’Hanrahan’s frees did keep the scoreboard ticking over for the Men in Blue & Yellow, Killyon continued to have the upper hand for the rest of the half and led 19 to 1-7 at half time.
After the interval David O’Reilly’s charges dominated for the best part of the next 20 minutes with excellent scores from play and placed balls, including a goal in the 40th minute. This purple patch put Ratoath well into the driving seat ( 2-14 to 1-11 ) by the 50th minute and established a lead they would not relinquish. The teams went score for score for the next 10 minutes before a 3rd goal in injury time provided the coup de grace for the men from South East Meath to eventually run out 11 point winners.
